Overall, I am not as satisfied with my advertisement as I hoped I'd be. I think mine could've gone better if planning had gone better. Although I managed to correct some mistakes I made I still feel like the quality isn't high enough and re shooting with better lighting would have been a better option. In hindsight I should've realised working with animals is harder than it looks, but nonetheless it would good to have that experience.
I began my research by looking at two different TV adverts for Tea. I compared them together looking at micro elements and target audience. This helped develop my idea as I was able to see how adverts target their audience and what style they use.
My idea changed a lot in this process, I never seemed to have a straight idea and when I did it was on too big a scale. I wanted something simple, which is why I changed my storyboard to make it more simple.
As I'm part of my target audience being a student myself I thought I could make it relatable. So after consideration I decided to change my storyboard to fit with something more natural, something that would capture the essence of a student. I decided to show what I get up to when I'm trying to study and how it doesn't always go as planned. Sometimes, its hard to concentrate and I get distracted. I know many fellow students who can vouch for that as they do the same themselves. We all procrastinate or get distracted by little things so why not re-create that. I decided to bring the tea in at the end using my dog as the re-branding of PG. I used PG as a stress reliever that shows that sometimes you've just got to have a cup of tea and sit down, relax and get back on with your work. In the case of this advert its the protagonists dog that shows her that by bringing a box of PG to her. I took this idea from experience as my dog loves tea himself and from research I found that people are more attracted to an advert with an animal in it.
I decided to use wide shots throughout my advert as I wanted to keep it simple and in one setting, shows the constraint of a student, its also personal, and it doesn't disorientate the viewer too much. I used a montage as it shows multiple things that happen over time in a very short time, which allows the viewer to realise that time has passed, and that my character can't concentrate on her work, hence making it more relatable.
When filming I came into a bit of trouble as I didn't have good enough lighting. As the days are getting shorter finding time to shoot somewhere with good lighting becomes tricky and I would've needed artificial lighting. As originally I was supposed to stick to my plan this would've worked however by changing my idea I had to film it quicker than I thought. My bedroom was lit but it wasn't as bright as I would've wanted it. However, I did fix somewhat of the problem in post, in hindsight however, I should have borrowed extra lights from springboard. If I hadn't changed my advert too late I would've had time to re shoot and sort out the dragged out 9 second long clips towards the end of the advert, I also would've borrowed a light, or tried to find time to shoot during the day as I no longer needed my parents in the advert.
Next time I'll be able to plan my time more efficiently, and as i'm now able to use Photoshop and premiere pro better, that should allow me more time to focus on other parts of my production schedule. I think its important not to rush and to take your time during the production stage and allow time for re shoots.
My print adverts were simple, as from research it shows that the video adverts usually contain more about the product whereas print are there to catch your eye. My prints were very simple and its clear what they are selling. However, it would've been better if they correlated with the video more. Perhaps using shots from the video itself. Although it would be hard considering my advert is very low lit and doesn't use various shots and multiple locations. Next time I will probably lean towards more of a clear narrative using a variety of shot types to help convey the message or story in a better way. What would've been a good thing to do would be to research montage and find an idea to take inspiration from and help to better my idea.
